Cost cuts are the reason for business relocation Swiss cryptocurrency pioneer Bitcoin Suisse is restructuring its business model and expanding internationally. As confirmed by the company, this strategic change could cost up to half of the jobs at its headquarters.

The Zug-based company plans to move a significant portion of its back-office and administrative operations from Switzerland to cheaper centers in Bratislava, Slovakia, and Vietnam.

According to local reports, the exact number of positions to be eliminated will depend on a mandatory 10-day consultation process. However, the first redundancies are to come into force before the end of the year. The employees were informed about the restructuring during a meeting with management on September 11. "In Bratislava and Vietnam, we can provide these services at a much lower cost," said the group's CEO and co-founder Andrej Majcen in an interview with financial website Finews.

Majcen stressed that the move is due to a long-term strategy, not market volatility. "We have a significant safety margin that will allow us to survive this stage," he said. "We are investing in growth, and Bitcoin Suisse is set to become a global brand."

The company, initially known for trading and storing cryptocurrencies, has expanded its operations to include staking and lending. Its latest reorganization aims to transform the company from a regional cryptocurrency specialist into an international asset management service provider, serving high-net-worth private clients, family offices, and institutional investors. To support this change of direction, Bitcoin Suisse has obtained several international licenses this year, including a MiCAR license for its subsidiary in Liechtenstein. This license allows it to operate throughout the European Economic Area under a regulatory passport. Bitcoin Suisse has also obtained licenses for digital asset and investment activities in Bermuda, as well as full approval from financial authorities in Abu Dhabi. Despite the reduction of employment in the country, the company plans to maintain its headquarters in Zug, retain the company name and Swiss customer service teams. The announcement follows a growing wave of job cuts in the financial sector in Switzerland, following the announcement of significant staff cuts by UBS, Helvetia Baloise, Raiffeisen Switzerland and Swiss Life.
